I am suspicious of routines that require an uninterrupted hour, a silent house, and a person who has not asked for water fifteen times.

The mama-care routine that actually survives here is much smaller: a good shower, a few products that do more than one job, and at least one quick comfort step afterward.

I need things to earn their place. If something saves time, functions beautifully, and looks good doing it, it has a much better chance of surviving family life than anything that requires me to pretend I have 20 butlers doing other tasks for me in order to use it. Optimum functionality, look, price, time-to-result etc ie best all around is my motto!

The shower has to be easy to start

While seemingly simple and underated this very multi-tasking shower caddy turns the products into an inviting little display while doing the very practical job of keeping everything I actually use in one place (including hair ties) — which is exactly why I respect it. No back-bending bottle scavenger hunt while I am half-listening for someone yelling “Mom” in a tone that could mean anything from a missing sock to a major incident.

Functional and beautiful is my favorite kind of overachieving.

The scrub that saves a step

The Bare Botanics Body Scrub Oil is exactly the kind of product I like: it does several jobs, and it does them well. In my actual routine, it covers the exfoliator, cleanser, and moisturizer. It leaves my skin fresh, polished, and soft without introducing another step—or another bottle—into the proceedings.

Plus, it smells amazing and comes in other scents when I want to mix things up. When time is of the essence—which, as a modern woman, is roughly always—this is my go-to. A product that lets me feel finished without creating a second routine inside the first is the sort of luxury I can actually use.

It also has the visual bonus of being easy to make neutral. If I choose a scent whose color accented label suddenly decides it is the loudest object in the bathroom, the easy-peel label comes off and the jar becomes clear-and-white without leaving a strange sticky residue (I have enough of those from the kids). There is a bit of momming where you just have to find the joy in being practical and mildly ridiculous at the same time. If removing one tiny visual argument from the day brings me peace, it is really in everyone’s best interest that I do it.

The little treat product

A few sprays of the Muse Apothecary Aloe + Eucalyptus + Lavender Room Ritual Mist into the bathroom air before, during, or after the shower transport me—briefly but convincingly—to a spa. It may be the quickest therapy I have ever booked, and no one has to find my insurance card.

Afterward, if possible I'll add in some extra treats...

After a shower, I keep the after-shower part to a few realistic things: face serum (for the spots), Naturium night cream (for the crinkles), neutral slippers (for a little bounce in my step), and, when my shoulders have become the family command center, a travel neck massager (for any stress that survived the room mist). That is the routine. No twelve-step transformation, no ceremonial silence—just enough care to feel a little more like myself before someone asks where the scissors are.
