How I Make a Malibu Morning Work With Little Ones

By the time the breakfast plates are being cleared, there are school bags to check, hair to smooth, sunscreen to apply, teeth to brush and a bottle to tuck in beside the baby gear. The Malibu light may look serene through the windows; inside, one missing shoe can still become the morning’s entire plot.
The products that help are not magical. They simply remove a few small steps, which can be enough to turn a dozen moving pieces into something resembling a routine.
The coffee has to be portable because apparently I am

I keep anything truly hot out of little hands, and the covered straw setup belongs only with a drink that is at an appropriate temperature. Practicality is wonderful; drinking very hot coffee through a straw is not the particular efficiency I am trying to achieve.
The baby breakfast pieces earn their keep

I use them only when I can still give the children and my surroundings my full attention—not while driving or pretending technology has made me invincible. Hands-free is useful; attention-free is not.
The familiar cup and bottle are quiet anchors

When the bottle is packed, the hair is brushed and the missing shoe has rejoined its pair, I do not need the morning to have been perfect. I need it to have been startable, which is better. Perfect has never packed a school bag; startable gets everyone out the door.
