How I Make a Malibu Morning Work With Little Ones

By the time the breakfast plates are being cleared, there are school bags to check, hair to smooth, sunscreen to apply, teeth to brush and a bottle to tuck in beside the baby gear. The Malibu light may look serene through the windows; inside, one missing shoe can still become the morning’s entire plot.
I like things that save a step and still look nice once they are being used. A cup I can carry, a bowl that can close and gear that changes jobs without being reassembled are much more useful than a beautiful routine that requires everyone to wait politely while I complete it.
The coffee has to be portable because apparently I am
The beige 40-ounce glass tumbler with silicone straw and flip-straw lid gives my drink a handle, a lid and a better chance of coming with me. It is a large glass tumbler rather than a small coffee cup, so I choose it for the job it actually does. The neutral color is lovely; not having to locate a second drink in the next room is lovelier.
I keep anything truly hot out of little hands, and the covered straw setup belongs only with a drink that is at an appropriate temperature. Practicality is wonderful; drinking very hot coffee through a straw is not the particular efficiency I am trying to achieve.
The baby breakfast pieces earn their keep

I use them only when I can still give the children and my surroundings my full attention—not while driving or pretending technology has made me invincible. Hands-free is useful; attention-free is not.
The familiar cup and bottle are quiet anchors

For the baby stage, the glass baby bottle with built-in silicone protection combines the glass bottle I like with a protective coating. I still treat it as glass, check it for damage and use the appropriate matching parts. Useful protection is a bonus, not a reason to expect a bottle to survive every possible experiment.
When the bottle is packed, the hair is brushed and the missing shoe has rejoined its pair, I do not need the morning to have been perfect. I need it to have been startable, which is better. Perfect has never packed a school bag; startable gets everyone out the door.
